Turned Wood Craft

The craft of making wooden lacquered objects is said to have been practiced from 300 BC. This craft is also known as turned wood craft as objects are made by turning the piece of wood on a lathe machine. Traditionally eco-friendly, organic colors are used which are derived from Anar, Kattha, Annatto seeds, Indigo, and Kasim plants. Because the wood is turned, there are no sharp edges in the toys, and organic, lead free colours make it safe for children. Lacquer finishing adds a glaze making them very attractive and even the grown ups cannot resist the temptation to steal a second gmace at it! This craft is mainly practiced in small pockets of Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, but facing challenges due to availability of wood, and increasing raw material prices.
