Ahir Embroidery

Yadavas are known as Ahirs in Gujarat. Legend goes that, of the followers of Lord Krishna who left with him from Mathura for Saurashtra, some Ahirs settled down in the Vagad region of Kutch.

Ahir embroidery is mostly bold and celebrates the geometric shapes, floral patterns, animals and birds through their designs. Ahir motifs are large and colourful, the embroidery lush, dense and chock-a-block with mirrors suggesting abundance and opulence.

Beauty of Ahir embroidery is to embrace change such as adaptation of abstract motifs, muted colours and minimalist designs without losing its identity such as use of specific stitches for specific functions: the small, round saankdi or chain stitch to outline the motifs; the vaano, the herringbone stitch, to fill in; and the daano, a single chain, or the bakhiyo, the backstitch, to highlight and provide the final flourish.

Ahir embroidery is practised by the Ahir and Meghwaad Gurjar communities.
