The Journey Didn't Begin With a Craft. It Began With a Question...

There are journeys we plan.

We choose destinations.
We book tickets.
We mark places on maps.
We pack our bags with excitement.

And then there are journeys that begin quietly.

A moment that stays with us.
A question that refuses to leave.
A feeling that something familiar suddenly appears unfamiliar.

Looking back today, I realize that my journey with Craftribute did not begin with a handcrafted product.

It began with a realization.

For years, I believed I knew my country.

How could I not?

I was born and brought up here.
I had travelled across cities and visited some of the most celebrated destinations of Bharat. I had read about its history, watched travel shows, and explored countless stories through the internet.

Yet, somewhere deep within, I knew there was a difference between knowing about a place and truly knowing it.

I had seen Bharat.

But I had not yet experienced its soul.

A Journey That Changed My Perspective

In December 2015, a journey to Mahabalipuram, Kanchipuram, and Puducherry quietly changed something within me.

It was a strange yet beautiful feeling.

There was a sense of familiarity and belongingness, even though the language was unfamiliar.

The landscapes felt different.
The food was different.
The traditions were different.

And yet, something connected.

It felt like meeting a distant relative for the first time and realizing that, despite years of separation, there was a shared bond.

But along with this connection came another realization.

While I felt connected to the place, I was disconnected from the everyday realities of the people who lived there.

Their stories.

Their struggles.

Their skills.

Their way of life.

That realization planted a question within me:

How can I belong to a land so deeply, and yet know so little about the lives and wisdom of the people who have shaped it?

The Beginning of a Different Journey

That question became the beginning of a new journey.

A journey to look beyond monuments and tourist destinations.

A journey to discover Bharat through its people.

Through its villages.

Through its traditions.

Through the hands that continue to create, preserve, and pass forward knowledge accumulated over generations.

And somewhere along this path, I discovered crafts.

Not just as beautiful objects.

But as living stories

Every Craft Has a Story

A handcrafted piece carries something that cannot be measured.

It carries the patience of the artisan.

The knowledge passed down through generations.

The relationship between humans and nature.

The memories of a community.

The values of a way of life.

A Warli painting is not just paint on a surface.

It is a celebration of harmony between humans, animals, and nature.

A terracotta vessel is not just clay shaped into an object.

It is a reminder of our ancient relationship with the earth.

An embroidered textile is not just thread and colour.

It is identity, resilience, and the story of countless hands.

When we understand the story behind a craft, the object transforms.

It stops being something we simply own.

It becomes something we connect with

Finding Bharat Through Its Crafts

Through Craftribute, I found myself stepping into a world I had only glimpsed before.

A world of artisans who have dedicated their lives to keeping traditions alive.

People who may not always appear in history books, but whose hands have preserved centuries of knowledge.

Communities who have lived closely with nature and understood rhythms that modern life often makes us forget.

The more I travelled through these stories, the more I realized something:

Perhaps these crafts are not just about preserving the past.

Perhaps they are also about remembering something important for our future.

What Can We Learn From the Wisdom We Overlook?

We often measure knowledge through education, degrees, technology, and achievements.

But spending time with artisans makes one reflect on a deeper question.

What if wisdom is not only about knowing more?

What if wisdom is also about knowing how to live?

To create without waste.

To respect nature.

To understand seasons.

To value community.

To find beauty in simplicity.

The communities that preserve these crafts have lived in harmony with nature for generations.

Perhaps the question is not whether they need to learn from us.

Perhaps there are things we need to learn from them.

Why 'The Craftribute Journal'?

The Craftribute Journal is an extension of this journey.

It is not meant to be a collection of articles about crafts.

It is an invitation to slow down.

To look closer.

To ask questions.

To discover the stories hidden behind the things we bring into our homes.

Through this Journal, we hope to explore:

  • The origins and history of Bharat's diverse crafts
  • The artisans and communities who keep them alive
  • The symbols, techniques, and philosophies hidden within them
  • The relationship between craft, culture, and nature
  • The relevance of these traditions in today's world

Most importantly, we hope to create a space where crafts are not just seen.

They are understood.

A Journey, Not a Destination

I started this journey searching for what I once called a "pinch of Bharat."

A small glimpse of something vast and intangible.

Something that felt like it belonged to me, yet remained unknown.

Looking back now, I realize I was not searching for places.

I was searching for connections.

With people.

With traditions.

With stories.

With the wisdom that quietly flows through generations.

And perhaps that is the beauty of Bharat.

It cannot simply be captured.

It has to be experienced.

One conversation.

One artisan.

One craft.

One story at a time.
