About Talapatra Chitra

Palm Leaf is locally known as Talapatra. Before paper was invented, palm leaves were used as a base to write on. In ancient times, the manuscripts were written on the these leaves. Converting the leaves into the base material is a meticulous process. Using a sharp tool, drawings are etched/engraved on the leaf. Lampblack mixed with oil is applied on the leaf, which highlights the engraved lines and the drawing is surfaced. There is no room for error as engraving can't be undone. Artisans from Odisha have cherished these ancient traditions and now transformed it into a unique art form which is world known for its intricate pictorial depiction of our cultural heritage such as  Dashavatar, Ramayan, Shivpuran etc.
